Fun Find Friday-Guest Post Christine from The Crafty Women

Today's post is a wonderful Fun Find Friday tutorial coming to your from The Crafty Women. Cristine has so many great ideas and tutorials on her website.

Check out this fantastic hutch remake

And this adorable J.Crew knockoff

Today she is proud to share a great jersey rug that would be perfect in any room.

My name is Christine from the Crafty Woman.
I am a craft addict.
Feels good to be in a place that understands me!

This tutorial proves my addiction and that for once, addiction can be a good thing.
 WARNING: this project takes time!
It took about 4 hours to cut all the strips.
It took about 30 hours to tie it.
Totally worth doing again!

I love how thick and soft this rug is!

Here is how to do it:
1 latch hook rug canvas 36 by 60 is $9.99 at Joann's
7-9 yards of jersey fabric or lots of t-shirts.
rotary cutter and mat

Fold your fabric in half length wise, twice.
Cut into long 1 inch strips.
You will then cut each long strip into 4 inch strips.
I made my rug 18" by 60" using up 9 yards of fabric (or 4860 strips).
If you don't tie yours so close together, you'll use a lot less.
But I wanted mine really thick.

If you opt to use t-shirts, you can dye them after cutting for uniform color.
Dying and washing them will result in curled edges.

 Fold each strip in half.
You could use pliers or a latch hook for pulling the strips through,
I found pliers were faster and easier on my hands.
Feed your hook/pliers through your hole and grab folded edge of strip.
Pull through about 1/4 of the way.

I then pushed the ends through the little loop I made.
And pulled tight.
I found it was faster to pull a row through
Then go back and tie them.
The canvas has squares which help keep track of where you left off.
From the back you can see how I went every other space,
every other row.

After hours and hours of that....you're done! Almost.

Now it is time to bind your rug.

Peel your binding from it's paper as you go.
Fold under raw edge of rug  and lay binding over it.
{note: I used masking tape around my raw edges while I was working.
This kept the edges from fraying!}
Pressing firmly, iron to seal binding.
Check bond and press again if needed.
Try to get as close to the edge as you can.
Put wherever you feet need something cozy to step on.

Greyhound approved.
{I get asked a lot about my dogs so if you are wondering:
Quigley is a retired racer we rescued.
He still can run 43 mph.
But would rather sleep on my rug all day.
Unless our female greyhound, Sadie, is on it.}

Sewing With Sergers All Wrapped Up

It is the end of Sewing with your Serger week and I have nothing to show for it. This week really got away from me. All my daily activities, church activities, topped with getting the flu for the last 2 days really cut into my sewing this week. So I am sorry to say I have no personal project to share.

HOWEVER, I do have a few projects that I have pinned I thought you might enjoy.

1. Maxi Dress by Sew Much Ado. This was the inspiration for my own project. I still plan on working on it next week so hopefully I will have something to show you soon.
2. Maxi Skirt by Elle Apparel. As my waistline is expanding I think I will be making a few of these to wear over the next 6 months.
3. Simple Serger blankets or napkins. Just Serge the edges for a fun color contrast on flannel blankets or dinner napkins. These napkins by Alder and Co are beautiful.
4. Adding detail with your Serger by Fishsticks and Fries.

Also here are some other beginner tutorials I thought might come in handy.
1. 4 Serging Techniques
2. LBG Studio Gathering and Rolled Hem

If you have a project you worked on this week please come and share it at our WOW US Wednesday Linky party. We really want to see what you have created.

Fun Find Friday - Little Blue Boo's Sienna Dress Pattern

Planning a trip to Disneyland with my daughter always inspires me to make her more fun Disney themed clothes.  She is very excited to have a new Mickey dress for this week's trip!
It's no secret that I am a huge fan of Lil Boo Blue and her clothing line.  If you know me personally you are aware that my daughter will only willingly wear two articles of clothing - 1) her LBB bird dress and 2) her LBB butterfly dress.  I put together a small collage of my daughter wearing only her favorite dresses.  These pictures were taken over the past few months.  Aren't the dresses (and my daughter) darling?
Earlier this year I purchased Lil Blue Boo's Sienna Dress Pattern
I can't believe it took me so many months to finally print the pattern and make something!  To be completely honest, I was a little nervous about attempting this dress.  I haven't sewn anything with a pattern in years.  I'm happy to report that this pattern was extremely easy to follow and I am excited to make more dresses!

I recently cleaned out my closet and found two perfect shirts to use with the pattern.  I used a striped shirt that was a couple of sizes too big for me and a Mickey Mouse shirt that no longer fit.
My daughter didn't want to pose for a picture in her new dress but I get a thumbs up approval.
I have a couple of other Lil Blue Boo patterns that I will be trying out soon!

If I'm not too busy on vacation, I will be linking this post here.

Flip Flop Fun Series - Fun Find Friday

I have found so many fun tutorials for flip flops online this week  So many that I could actually turn this two week series into a summer of posts about flip flops!  Instead of depriving you from seeing all the other great things we are working on, today I'll just show you some of the tutorials that have made it to my "to do" folder on my desktop.

I recently discovered Alisa Burke's blog and I love it!!

Her flip flops are great but so is that view!  I would love to be able to take all my tutorial pictures by the ocean!

I saw her Interchangeable Flip Flop Back Straps earlier this year and saved the tutorial on my desktop.  The first girly baby shower I get invited to is going to be my reason for making a cute little pair!

Fun Find Friday-Paper Bag Skirts

Have you seen the Month of free patterns on Grosgrain yet? If you haven't you need to go and check it out. There are so many great ideas already from kids items, to adult clothing, to other crafts and nic-nacks. One item I loved in particular is the Paper Bag Skirt by Adventures in Dressmaking. I have seen these around, they are really trendy right now and I was planning on making one for my daughter but then I saw this and thought, why not make one for myself? I usually don't like making clothing for myself because it is so hard to tell if something is going to look good on your body without trying it on first. But what the heck right?

Well here is how it turned out... I LOVE IT. It is made of a berry colored linen and so comfy. I love the high waist too. I do have to warn you, the pattern is not as easy to follow as it looks. The skirt is really simple but she left out a few details that make the instructions easier to follow. SO, check out the comments section because she actually clears up the holes there. I didn't check out the comments and just winged it myself and thankfully I have learned enough about sewing to work it out. And I bought enough fabric to make my daughter one as well, or maybe a cute pair of shorts.

Thank You Mom

If you've read the About Heather tab on this blog, you know I grew up beading and making jewelry with my best friend at a small local craft store during our summer breaks.  My mom deserves some recognition for allowing my creativity to grow during those summers.  I don't believe I ever thanked my mom for giving me rides, buying me supplies, making me feel like every little project I made was incredible, etc., etc., etc.!  Mom, thank  you!  Not only did you foster my creativity, but you set some pretty high standards with your own projects.  My mom sewed most of my baby clothes and always helped sew our local dance company costumes.  She also quilted, cross stitched, crocheted, and painted pottery!  I'm proud to say my creative genes came from my mom!

Me, my mom, and my daughter - Mother's Day dinner 2011
I made my mom a couple of fun things for her Mother's Day gift.  You might remember one of my very first posts on this blog - the felt pom initial cards.  My mom received a small set with distressed edges and vintage looking flowers.  So pretty.

I also made her something I saw at Sweet Rose Studios.  I met Katie at the Creative Estates conference and I really enjoy reading her blog.  She recently made a very functional family calendar/planner.  You can find Katie's great planner with a free template download here.  I used the template provided and made a few changes.  My parents never seem to know each other's work schedules so I thought it would be nice for them to be able to see both their schedules in one place.  I also removed the line to fill in blog stuff and added a line to write in the date.

Last year I purchased a binding machine.  Nothing fancy but it definitely is good to have on hand.  I have used it to make so much already - coloring books, recipe books, photo books, calendars, etc.  It was perfect for this project and helped me avoid a trip to Staples.  I embellished the cover with leftover stickers from a different project.

My mom loved it!
I am so proud that I have made sure to incorporate crafting into my daughter's daily schedule when we are home.  She loves to paint, draw, color, mold, glue, shape, and try any other new project I present to her.   I hope one day she can look back at her childhood and say that I inspired her creativity the way my own mother did mine.
