Darth Vader Costume T-shirt

My son loves costumes and dressing up. He has a big imagination and becomes a new character every day, sometimes a few different ones throughout the day. Lately he has really been excited about Star Wars (it was on TV so we tried it out, instantly hooked). He saved up his money doing chores around the house to buy a Darth Vader costume. Unfortunately Target did not have the whole costume just the light saber and mask. So I suggested I make him one. At only 4 years old, he is still easily please and was so excited for mom to make him a Darth Vader costume.

I used a plain black t-shirt (it is really hot right now so we went with the short sleeves) and added some felt. I pretty much just cut out the pieces and hand sewed them onto the shirt. I created the button panel and the belt on the shirt. Then we used a pair of black pants for the bottoms. He was so happy with the final product he wore it for 3 days and nights straight (I had to pry it off of him and immediately throw it in the wash).

He walked around the house for a week sneaking up on me in his new outfit and mask, scaring me and then whipping off the mask saying, "Ah mom, it's just me Jackson." What a funny kid!

Boys Bow Ties

I am always looking for things to make for my son. Boys are so much tougher than girls, or maybe just not as much fun (no ruffles or lace lol). I recently saw this adorable bow tie tutorial on Delia Creates. It was so easy I whipped out 3 in about 30 min and plan on making lots more. One thing I would adjust is the measurements. She suggests adding 2-3 inches I suggest adding at least 4 inches to the length it was way too short and I have to add that much elastic just to make it fit. Other than that great tutorial and great instructions on tying the bow tie.

Jackson loves these so much, he has been wearing them around the house...even without a collared shirt.

A Blazer for a Boy

What does every little boy need for fall?

A snazzy blazer

And thanks to Melissa of Melly Sews I had the opportunity to make one when I tested her new blazer pattern. The pattern is fantastic. Fairly easy sewing for such a structured piece. Her pattern pieces are true to size and the instructions are easy to follow. The blazer has options for 1 or 3 buttons and it is fully lined. You can go and check out all the variations and buy the pattern yourself at MellySews.

Jackson picked out all the fabric himself. Brown stretch corduroy and a cotton lining with cars and roads. I just love making clothing for him because he is so grateful when I make him something. And he always tells everyone, "my mom made this for me."

I am thinking of making one for my daughter next.
