Tile Coasters.
This weeks project was inspired by another great Pinterest find.
Tile Coasters.
They are just tiles and scrapbook paper.
I love this time of the year however sometimes I get a little stressed over what gifts to get everyone. Especially the grandparents and in-laws. Then it hit me, make some picture coasters for them. I printed off pictures of our family and a family trip we took over the summer and put them on the tiles to give to my in-laws. I like the idea of having pictures out where you can see them, rather than tucked away in some photo book.
Want to make some for yourself or a loved one?
Here is what you need:
-tiles from Home Depot 16 cents each (Lowes has some but there is not a variety and they are most expensive)
-pictures printed or cut to 4x4 squares
-mod podge
-spray glue
-felt
Start by making sure your tiles are really clean. Then spray each tile with spray glue. Place the picture on the tile and smooth out any bubbles. Paint over the picture with mod podge (remember it dries clear). Once the tile is dry flip the tile over and spray the back with spray glue. Then place the felt down (this will prevent scratching).
I love the look and how affordable and easy this gift is to make, even my 3 year old son helped me. I know that my family will love them. Personal and creative...the perfect gift.I also tried doing it with black tiles (37 cents each). The only issue is the spray glue on the black. You will need to scrap it off of the boarder.

really nice idea...and I could imagine having fun with some of my friends with "silly and Crazy" photos from the past!!
I feel I have to mention how disappointed I am with this craft. Luckily, the person who received the gift for Christmas understands & doesn't mind.
However, I have to take them back & fix them. They're streaky from even the thinnest layer of mod podge, sweating cups leave a ring stain & even dry cups will stick to the coaster lifting it off the table. I don't know where I went wrong.

Great idea! I just used it to put family pictures on my tile table. thank you!
I'm curious as to why you used spray glue when you can put the mod podge on the back of the pics and on the top of the coasters to adhere them? Is there an advantage to using the spray glue? I only ask because I am getting ready to do these this weekend and want to make sure I'm prepared and have all our supplies and do it right! Thanks!
Heather brings up a good point..if you don't spray these with a sealant afterwards, the mod podge will pick up dust and debris over time and will absorb the water from the drinks and do exactly what she mentioned happened with her!
I just did 32 of these for my friends and family for Christmas, came out beautiful although I did take the advice of another commenter and sealed them with clear acrylic sealant which also made them shiny. Thank you so much for blogging about these! I love them and know that my family will love them too!! Also, cutting up the felt for the back is such a hassle I think I'm going to try to find some adhesive felt or perhaps use foam. Very happy with how these came out!! :D
You all make this look/sound so easy, I sure wish I could figure out what I'm doing wrong! I washed the tiles, sprayed them with spray adhesive and attached the pictures. When I try to brush on the mod podge, however, the pictures wrinkle! I've repeated (and repeated)making sure that there are no lifted edges, and still they wrinkle! Do I need to use heavy picture type paper (I'm just using copy paper)? Any suggestions?
I love this idea and want to make some for Christmas. Do you use regular paper or photo paper? Thank you!
You should probably use photo paper cause it's thicker
Can you uses pictures printed out from photo kiosks?
These turned out great. I had my photos developed at Walgreens and they held up beautifully and look very professional. I used mod lodge to place photos on the tiles and hot glued the felt on the back. I used a sealant on the finished product. I allowed each coat (2) mod lodge to dry for one day in between. (more time than necessary) and allowed al to dry over the weekend before adding the sealant. Couldn't be happier to give these to my parents for Christmas. We did 4 coasters times 34 students. Large project, but worth it!
