Baby on the Brain-Nursery

I am 15 weeks pregnant now and have been really interested in all the baby stuff, especially the nursery. I am going to have to give up my beloved craft room but it is a small price to pay for a bundle of joy. Here are a few of my favorite ideas so far:

Project Nursery

These colors are so serine. And I love that rocking chair.

This is such a creative idea for a boy's room. I love the colors and the variety.

I love the dimensions of the flowers. It is simple but beautiful and the texture is divine.

Displaying vintage dresses on the wall, what a great way to show off all the dresses I have made and collected.

Pinterest
Modern and chic, with a great color combo. And those stripes on the wall are a great focal point behind the crib.

This room is so luxurious. I would sleep in here myself. I love the color combo and that ceiling is to die for.

I love the space saving opportunities here. Placing the crib in an open closet can make a small room seem bigger. I could do some draping
around the frame to make it a little special hideout for the little bug.

What a fun theme! I think all my kids would want to stay in a Peter Pan decorated room.

These rooms are all amazing, I would be lucky to have a nursery as beautiful as these. But some of the themes and ideas are fantastic and I could really use them to create something special for my little one. Not knowing it the baby is a boy or a girl yet puts the planning on hold, but I can always look and dream right?

Nesting Wreath

Spring is like waking up after a three month sleep. The colors, the sunshine, and all of nature come out to enjoy the weather and a new life. I sometimes find myself driving down the street a little slower than usual, with the windows rolled down, the radio off, and the hint of a breeze flowing across my face; listening to the world around me. This was my inspiration for the nesting wreath, an example of the beautiful spring colors and birth of new things to come.

Here is what you need for this project:

-a twig wreath (available at Hobby Lobby or pretty much any craft store.)

-ribbon for the tie and bow (about 3 yards)

-yarn (I picked three different colors but you could do all the same color)

-water balloons

-liquid starch

-flour

-water

-clear string (I used jewelry thread)

-card stock

-bird template or any other animal you want to use

-hot glue gun

First you are going to make the string eggs. These are very simple but must dry overnight so do this step first. Begin by blowing up your water balloons with air. Once you have at least 3 balloons blown up mix together : 1 tsp flour, ½ tsp water, and ¼ cup glue. Cut your yarn into a long strip. The length depends on the size of your balloons and however much you are willing to work with at a time. Mine were about a yard long. Dip your yarn into the glue mixture and start wrapping it around the balloon. You can do this in a crossing motion or random, that is up to you and the kind of design you want on your eggs. **Be aware that once dipped in the glue mixture the color of the yarn will darken. I put my string in the starch mixture and slowly skimmed off the excess glue with my fingers so when it dries you don’t have a lot of starch between your strings. Cover the entire balloon with string leaving some spaces. This took me about 3 yards of yarn. Once you are finished place your eggs on a piece of wax paper to dry overnight and repeat with the other balloons. **Make sure there is enough starch mixture that the yarn will become stiff and hold its shape.

While you wait for your balloons to dry you can begin to cut out your birds. Use the template provided or any other shape to trace onto cardstock. Then cut out the shapes and arrange them on the wreath the way you like. I cut out 7 birds in varying sizes, **odd numbers of shapes look best. Once you have your shapes in place you can begin to hot glue them onto your wreath.

Next you will attach your string eggs. Begin by popping the balloon and removing it from the string portion. Next use your clear string and weave it through the string egg tying off both ends so that the egg stays in place. Repeat this process with the other eggs. With your wreath laying on a flat surface arrange your eggs in the center of the wreath and tie the loose ends of the clear string to the sides of the underside of the wreath.

Finally take your ribbon (1 ½ to 2 yards) and make a large circle attaching the loose ends together either by sewing or glue. Loop your ribbon circle around the top of the wreath. Create a bow with the remaining ribbon and hot glue your bow to the intersection of your ribbon loop.

Now you have a simple wreath for your door or inside your home that will remind you of all the aspects you love about spring. Happy Crafting!

Spring Pillow Makeover

I was in need of a quick Spring remake, it is Spring now. I decided to make some new Spring themed pillow covers. Pillow covers are so EASY to make. I took me 1 hour to make 3 covers. I wanted the covers to be simple with some fun quirky aspects so I printed some images on fabric to add to the pillows. "Printed on Fabric you say?" Anyone can do it.

All you need is a decent printer, fabric, and some freezer paper. Iron the freezer paper onto the fabric really good...iron, iron, iron.

Then place the fabric in your printer making sure the fabric side is the side that will be printed on. Create your image in whatever format you like (I used google images and photoshop). Click print and voila you have an image printed on fabric. All you have to do is peal the paper off and use the fabric however you like.I sewed mine onto my pillow covers before I sewed them up and I used a little embroidery stitching on one of the images for some extra fun. I love how they turned out. So much better than my old grungy ones and I plan on making many more in the near future.

Printing on fabric is so useful. You can print your own labels, print subway art on your favorite fabric print, or use it for banners.

Another New's Years Goal-Twin Quilts

Sorry for the lack of new and inspiring posts this week but I have been busy and working on some projects that are taking longer than my normal projects take. One of these is matching quilts for my kid's room. My son and daughter share a room, their choice actually they like to be close to each other. Sometimes I even find them sleeping in the same bed one on each end. Anyways, I have been searching for some fabric or bedding that would be unisex but still fun. I haven't seen anything that I liked until this fabric line caught my eye and I instantly fell in love:

Echo by Lotta Jansdotter for Windham Fabrics

I love this line. I even bought a few extra yards just for future projects. I heard somewhere if you like a print you buy a yard, you love a print you buy 2, if you can't do without it you buy the whole bolt. I wish I could buy the whole bolt but I can't decide which one I would choose. You can find it on Fabric.com or Etsy in 1/2 yard packages like I did.

Here is the quilt pattern I am working on:

It is a simple pattern with the middle blocks measuring 4.5"x4.5" and the side panels measuring 8.5"x2.5" and the smaller sides 4.5"x2.5".

Then after searching I found these great prints that I plan on altering and creating canvases out of. They go perfect with the color scheme and I love the simplicity of the images.

It is taking me longer than I planned to finish the quilts I am almost done with the blocks and then I just have to assemble it together. I am so excited for when it is done.
